[00:00:39] If you're a guest with us, I want to welcome you. My name's Tom. I have the privilege of serving the church as the lead pastor, and I'm stoked to be able to be with you this morning. For you guests, so glad that you're here. Our prayer is that you would encounter God among us.
[00:00:53] Take just a moment and if you can, if you're anything like me, I can kind of tend to drift in and out of what Mark talked about when we were singing. This concept, John 15, this concept of abiding, of, like, remaining with God, like staying with God and not treating God like it's this. I don't know, like we're with him and then we're not. And then we acknowledge that he's there and then we don't. It's like this in and out kind of thing.
[00:01:17] That's not God's desire for the Christian life. That's not God's desire for the disciple of Jesus. God's desire is that we would consistently be engaging with Him. Believe it or not, that's what prayer is. It's that engagement with God in whatever that we're doing.
[00:01:30] And so as we get going this morning, I just want to invite you really, really quickly with wherever you are, whatever you're doing, you're trying to get settled in right now, that's great.
[00:01:39] If you could just give me your attention for one second before you find your Bible and your pen and your journal.
[00:01:45] And I just want to ask you to give your faculties, your senses, your mind, your heart, your inner man, your inner woman, over to the reality that, like, God isn't distant right now.
[00:02:05] And if he's not distant, what does that mean?
[00:02:08] Yeah, he's nearby, huh? Like, real close.
[00:02:14] You could make the case biblically that God couldn't get any closer than he is like, right now.
[00:02:24] And the reason I say that is because we are assembled as a people for a reason, primarily for him to honor him, to bless him, to worship him, to bring him pleasure, to enjoy the pleasure of being in his presence, to enjoy the pleasure of experiencing his spirit at work through one another.
[00:02:42] It was fun to watch you guys chatting and talking and just the mutual encouragement.
[00:02:47] There's so much love that this church has for one another. It's spectacular, it's beautiful. And if you're new, you'll see.
[00:02:55] But I say that because I believe that God wants to strengthen and encourage you this morning with his presence.
[00:03:01] And if you're anything like me, it can be really easy to kind of miss that.
[00:03:07] And I don't want anybody to miss it.
[00:03:10] He's near, he's real, real close. And I believe that he wants to bless us this morning. And so I think he wants to strengthen us this morning with his grace, with his mercy, with his power.
[00:03:20] And if there's anybody here at the chance that you're here and you're not yet in Christ, my desire is that you would encounter him this morning, that you would see Jesus clearly for who he is, that there's nobody like him, that nobody who's ever existed. Whoever will exist loves you like Jesus loves you.
[00:03:36] And that just like one encounter with the love of Jesus can utterly change a person's life. And that's my hope and my prayer for every single one of us that we would encounter Jesus at that level. And if you're not yet in Christ, that you would put your faith in him and it would change the trajectory of your life. And not just the trajectory of your life, but the trajectory of your eternity.
[00:03:55] Cause there's a difference between being in church and in Christ. Right? And so my hope and my prayer is that every single one of us in this room, we would experience every spiritual blessing of being in Christ.
[00:04:06] Okay? So without further ado, you go ahead and grab your Bible. We're going to be in Matthew chapter 22 this morning. We're continuing on in our series, the King and His Kingdom. We've been going through Matthew's Gospel for, gosh, quite some time. This is what, like, I think. Let me. I have it written down here. This is.
[00:04:23] I think it's message 107. 107. I believe I could be wrong on that, but we're over 100 messages in Matthew at this point this morning. I feel like, man, oh, man, there's so much for us in this text. We're gonna be in Matthew chapter 22, starting in verse 41. And we're going through this series. We wanna learn as much as we can. About the King Jesus, the king of the universe and his kingdom, the kingdom of God, the kingdom of Heaven. What does it look like when God is ruling? What does it look like when God is reigning? What does it look like when God gets his way? When God actually is put on the throne of a human being's life, what do things look like? And you can imagine with me for a second, can you imagine if, let's just say just in your life, if God got His way in every area of life, if he was the king over every area of your life, what would be the ripple effects of that? The ripple effects of that would. No doubt people would experience love through you in ways that are transformative for them.
[00:05:16] You would be so, like, confident in your worth and your value and your contribution to society and the people around you, because God's put His hand on you and he's filled you with his spirit and he's using you for his purposes. And you'd feel the fulfillment in that. And you can imagine that compounds like households and towns and neighborhoods and cities and, dare I say, countries and maybe even the whole planet filled with the love of God. The kingdom of God coming on the earth. That's what. But Jesus taught us to pray, right? Lord, let your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Like, could you just imagine with me for a second what that could look like? That's the invitation that God is inviting you into the kingdom of God. The kingdom of heaven. It's not just a place you go to after you die, although it is.
[00:06:01] It's a reality that you and I can experience here and now. And that's the invitation, the good news, the gospel of the kingdom of God. That's what Jesus came preaching, and he's still been preaching through his people for 2,000 years. That's the invitation and that's what we're trying to learn in this series. We want to look at Matthew's gospel through the lens of the kingdom of God and what its king is like.
[00:06:22] And so what I want to do is go ahead and find verse 41. That's where we're going to start. But before we read the passage together, I want to pray for us, and I'd love it if you would join me.
[00:06:31] Let's pray together.
[00:06:44] Holy Spirit, thank you for the reminder of your presence with us.
[00:06:49] Thank you for the opportunity to be together, to slow down, take our foot off the gas for just a bit.
[00:07:03] Thank you for helping us become more aware of your presence.
[00:07:07] And I ask that you would make us more aware of your purposes, the things that you desire for us.
[00:07:16] Help us to see Jesus more clearly. I pray and as a result that we'd experience more pleasure in your kingdom.
[00:07:27] Help me to love and serve these incredible people.
[00:07:32] Have your way among us. We pray and all God's people said together.
[00:07:35] Amen.
[00:07:37] Okay, so where we pick up here in verse 41, a little bit of context, if you haven't been following along in this series, but we're basically find ourselves in Holy Week. Holy Week is the final week of Jesus life, right? He knows he's going to the cross. These are the final days leading up to that. He's doing a lot of ministry, he's doing a lot of teaching. And at this point in the story and the events, really, it's not like a myth, it's not a fable, it's not fiction. This is real.
[00:08:02] In the midst of these events, like where we find ourself, where we pick up here In Matthew chapter 22, the Jewish religious leaders, they've had it with Jesus.
[00:08:10] They've had it with his influence, they've had it with his teaching, they've had it with his miracles, they've had it with his ministry, okay? And what they do is they make several attempts, hear me, at discrediting Jesus publicly, okay? So not behind closed doors. Stay strong, Papa, you got this.
[00:08:28] They're trying to discredit Jesus and they're doing it publicly, okay? And their plan is they try to trap Jesus by asking him a series of questions. If you've been journeying with us, we've gone through the last several weeks, we've gone through these questions that they posed to Jesus publicly. And here's the deal, here's the deal. Each one of their attempts, it backfires on them spectacularly. Because in their attempt to trap Jesus, his response to their attempt to trap him with questions, it exposes these guys, it exposes their hypocrisy and how poor leaders they are and how they're actually worshiping God and all these, their incompetencies, all these things.
[00:09:02] Now what's cool about today's passage is you have these series of public confrontations where these Jewish religious leaders, they're trying to trap Jesus with their questions and it backfires on them. Here in today's passage, Jesus flips the script on these guys and what he does is he asks them a question and it's an important one.
[00:09:24] Let's check it out.
[00:09:25] Verse 41.
[00:09:29] While the Pharisees, that's one of the groups of those religious leaders. While the Pharisees were together, Jesus questioned them.
[00:09:37] Here's the question.
[00:09:39] What do you think about the Messiah?
[00:09:42] Whose son is he?
[00:09:44] They replied David's. They're referring to King David, verse 43. Jesus asked them, how is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, by the Holy Spirit, calls him Lord. Okay, next, Jesus, what he's about to do right now is he's about to quote King David from Psalm 110, verse 1. Okay, now this is super important, and here's one of the reasons why.
[00:10:10] Psalm 110, specifically verses 1 through 4. But Psalm 110 is one of the most important prophetic texts in, in all of scripture about the Messiah. We're gonna get into the Messiah in just a second. But it's one of the most important passages in all of the Bible that is predicting a coming Messiah, a coming Christ, a coming Savior. Okay? Now, in fact, of all of the Old Testament passages that are quoted in the New Testament. So think about this with me. The New Testament will oftentimes quote the Old Testament. Of all the times that that happens, of all the times the New Testament quotes the Old Testament.
[00:10:45] Of all the Old Testament passages that are quoted in the New Testament, Psalm 110 verses 1 through 4 is quoted the most often of any other passage in the Old Testament. What does that tell us?
[00:10:56] It's pretty important, huh? Pretty big deal.
[00:10:59] That's what Jesus is about to quote right here in verse 44. Let's read it right now. In verse 44, he starts quoting Psalm 110.
[00:11:07] He's quoting David. King David wrote this.
[00:11:10] The Lord declared to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.
[00:11:21] And then he pulls out of the quote and he goes, this is Jesus speaking, verse 45.
[00:11:25] If King David calls him Lord, how then can he be his son?
[00:11:33] In verse 46, says, no one was able to answer him at all. And from that day, no one dared to question him anymore.
[00:11:41] That's the passage.
[00:11:43] Now, at first glance, you may not be like, okay, what do we do with this? There's so much here. Okay, There's a few things that I want to focus on from this passage. Hear me, that have significant implications for your life. This isn't arbitrary. This is not just like Bible study. This. If we can grasp some of the things that Jesus is highlighting in this passage. Listen to me, I'm not trying to be hyperbolic. There's stuff here that will utterly transform and change your life.
[00:12:07] Like hugely valuable stuff. Okay? The first thing I'm gonna touch on this first thing briefly, but it's important.
[00:12:13] Jesus, he poses a question. Did you catch it? He asks them a question.
[00:12:17] Where does he get the answer from?
[00:12:22] Yeah, he gets the answer from the scriptures, from God's word, right?
[00:12:27] So hear me.
[00:12:28] This may seem overly simple, but it's a critical part of being a disciple of Jesus. And here's what it is.
[00:12:35] Disciples of Jesus, hear me. They go to God's Word for the answer.
[00:12:43] Simple. Yeah, cool. Yeah, right? Disciples of Jesus, they go to God's word for the answer. Listen to me. You don't need me to tell you this, but I'm gonna say it anyway. In your life, if you've been alive for more than a day in your life, life will throw all sorts of questions at you.
[00:12:59] You will be presented with all sorts of things that you don't necessarily have an answer to right away. Life will pose all sorts of questions on you. And they're like simple questions. Sometimes they're deeper questions. But life will throw questions at you that require an answer that you can't just, like, set aside and not move forward with.
[00:13:18] To set it aside and not move forward with, in and of itself, is answering that question with either apathy or whatever, right? But life will throw all sorts of questions at you, like identity questions.
[00:13:29] Here's one of the deepest questions that you could ever ask.
[00:13:33] Who am I?
[00:13:37] Like, if you were to answer that question honestly, what would you say? Would you start describing what you do for a living? Would you describe what your hobbies are? Would you describe what you look like? Would you describe your life experience? Would you, like, who are you?
[00:13:52] It's a pretty big question.
[00:13:54] How do you engage with life without actually having a decent understanding of that question? It's a big one. It's an identity question. Life will throw questions at you all the time. Who am I? How about this one? What's my purpose?
[00:14:06] Not just, who am I? Why am I?
[00:14:10] Big question, important answer.
[00:14:14] Life will throw all sorts of questions on you. Identity questions. How about relational questions like how should I treat other people, whether I like them or don't like them?
[00:14:26] Youth in the room. How do I navigate friendships? It's tricky.
[00:14:31] Take some skill, take some wisdom. Take some understanding.
[00:14:35] Take some compassion, take some kindness.
[00:14:38] How should I treat others? How should I engage with people? How should I speak to and about others? How should I think about others?
[00:14:45] All these relational questions that, whether you realize it or not, you actually have formulated answers to those questions. And those answers kind of fluctuate depending on how you feel that day. And right.
[00:14:56] If I'm feeling good that day, I can exercise patient with my family. If I'm not feeling good that day, I feel like. The answer should not necessarily be patience.
[00:15:04] Thank you.
[00:15:06] Or am I the only one?
[00:15:10] How about this one? Parents in the room. Parenting questions.
[00:15:14] Am I the only one that I'm trying to love and serve and raise and parent my children?
[00:15:20] And things come up, whether they bring questions or not. I'm posed with things. Life will throw questions that I'm like, I don't necessarily have an answer right now that I feel really great about.
[00:15:32] Parenting questions, financial questions. Life's gonna throw all sorts of questions your way. Vocational questions. The things that you face in your job. What should you do? What should you not do?
[00:15:46] Life will throw all sorts of questions at you. Some of you, you're facing kind of big questions right now in your life.
[00:15:53] Stuff with work.
[00:15:55] What do I do? What do I not do?
[00:15:58] Stuff with relationships. What do I do? What do I not do? You're facing questions right now. I'll be candid with you. This past few weeks, we have been faced with some very difficult pastoral questions.
[00:16:14] What do we do?
[00:16:17] What do we not do? What do we say? What do we not say? Elders and the staff, like, we've been praying. God, what would you have us do with these very sensitive situations? Very painful, very hard, very difficult in some regards. Wicked things.
[00:16:38] What do we do?
[00:16:41] We need to seek some legal counsel.
[00:16:43] Sure. That was important, right? We need to seek some professional counsel from people who are experts in certain things. What do we do? It's important. Sure. But hear me. As helpful and as beneficial as that can be, listen to me. The answer to our pastoral questions is found in the word of God.
[00:16:57] Listen, you might be thinking, well, that applies. You're a pastor, Tom. That makes sense. The same thing applies to you in every single area of your life, friend.
[00:17:07] The answers to the questions that life throws at you, I'm here to tell you they are found in the word of God for you. Like they're there.
[00:17:16] The answers are found in the word of God. Like, I dare you. Read Proverbs.
[00:17:21] See if you don't see incredible answers to the questions that you face in your job or your marriage or your parenting or your friendships. Read the Psalms. Same thing. Read Ecclesiastes. Every single, frankly, every book in the Bible.
[00:17:36] There's answers there for you to the questions that. Honestly, I'm gonna leave that. I'm gonna filter that one for you. There's answers there for you. Okay, my question for you this morning is when the questions of life come your way that you need answers to, where do you tend to look for answers?
[00:17:57] Listen, maybe it's AI is changing the game, right? But like Google was the place for the longest time. What do I do? About as helpful as Google is, I'm here to tell you Google's got nothing on God's word.
[00:18:12] Nothing.
[00:18:14] Google's got Nothing. Your favorite YouTube influencer who can help give you somewhat.
[00:18:18] There's a time and a place for that, which is actually crazy to think about. Like my entire college education is for free on YouTube now. It's wild. YouTube can be helpful. But is that your go to? Where do you go to? Do you go to AI? Maybe type it in the chat box. Like even your favorite, you know, podcast, preacher, whatever. Like, life's gonna throw all sorts of questions your way that you need answer to if you're taking notes. My point this morning is this. The answer is found in the word of God.
[00:18:46] The answer is found in the word of God.
[00:18:51] Do you have any idea how valuable that book is, man?
[00:18:59] Just think for a second. Just think for a second.
[00:19:02] The money that you spend on any form of entertainment every month, maybe it's Netflix, maybe it's your Spotify account. The things that you go to for entertainment, or the things that you go to for pleasure, or the things that you go. They're just the simple things like, do you have any.
[00:19:22] We're placing a value on those things. And I'm not here to say I love music. I think YouTube can be a gift.
[00:19:28] Netflix, great, all that, that's fine. I'm not here to throw shade at that stuff. I'm just telling you. I think we lose sight.
[00:19:34] Like, I think we forget the unbelievable treasure that the word of God is to us.
[00:19:41] Like the current. Like, if I had to put a price tag on it, I'd say, like, what would I not be willing to pay as a subscription every month to the Bible? And yet it's free for you.
[00:19:50] Or maybe you're like, crap, I can't afford 30 bucks for a Bible. If that's you, you don't have a Bible, I will gladly buy you. Listen to me, if you don't have a Bible, I will buy you any bible you want, even the expensive ones.
[00:20:01] Cause it's not even close to it. Like, the price Tag should be 1000x because of the value that it provides, the answers, the deep truth that it provides. And not like in a one time deal. Like every single thing you face it's fun for me right now because I can look around the room and I know so many of your stories, and I know the things that you guys face, and I know the ups and the downs and the victories and the defeats and all the things. And I've seen how God's word is shaping your lives and your family's lives and your household's lives. And I'm just.
[00:20:34] Can we just pause enough and recall and remember enough the incredible value of the Word of God to us?
[00:20:45] And maybe you're here and you're like, I actually, if I'm honest, like, I don't. I haven't really tapped into that much value.
[00:20:51] I'm so excited for you because when the light bulb goes off and you realize this is more than just like, words on a page, there's a man behind the pages looking back at me.
[00:21:04] The treasure, the answers that you're seeking in life, I'm here to tell you they're found in the word of God. Okay.
[00:21:12] All right. I want you to look back at verse 42, Jesus question.
[00:21:17] Look at it. It's important. It's a big question. He says, what do you think about the Messiah?
[00:21:22] Whose son is he? Okay, many of you in the room, you're familiar with what the Messiah is, what the Messiah means, but I need to touch on it briefly because it's important for our context here. Okay? Messiah. It comes from the Hebrew language.
[00:21:36] It comes from the Hebrew language. Maybe you've heard Christ.
[00:21:40] Yes. Christ comes from Greek. They mean the same thing. Messiah and Christ means the same thing. Some of you are like, I thought Christ was Jesus. Last name? No, it's a title. Messiah is a title. Christ is a title. So it's more like Jesus the Messiah. Jesus the Christ. You track it with me. Okay? What? Those two words, they mean the same thing.
[00:21:59] What messiah in Christ means literally is the anointed one.
[00:22:05] Can you say that word? Anointed? Say it. Anointed. You've probably heard that word thrown around, huh?
[00:22:11] Like, maybe you've heard it in the context of like, oh, that's an anointed singer.
[00:22:17] She's an anointed leader. You've heard that. So you've probably heard this word used. Do you know what it means, though?
[00:22:25] This is one of those Christianese words, if you're new with us. Christians say a lot of things, and sometimes they don't know what they mean, but because it floats in the air and you just say it. Cause it sounds cool. Anointed can be one of those words. So if you know what it means, great. If you're hearing, you don't know what it means. Give me five minutes. Okay? Anointed.
[00:22:43] If you look at the Bible, you look at the scriptures, all throughout the Scriptures, people, what they would do is they would anoint things or even sometimes people with oil.
[00:22:54] Not like motor oil, okay? Like typically olive oil.
[00:22:59] So get the picture. They would literally put oil on an object.
[00:23:04] Or like there's. Think like a shield, okay? Guys are about to go into battle, and they would put oil on the shield. How would you oil your shield? I'll tell you in just a second. They would put oil on their shield as they're going into battle. Or if they built an altar to offer worship to God and offerings to God, they put oil on it, right? They would anoint it with oil.
[00:23:27] Now, they wouldn't just anoint things, they would also anoint people.
[00:23:31] All right?
[00:23:32] So whether it was an object or. Or a person, listen, there was a lot of purpose and meaning behind why they would do that.
[00:23:42] Check this out. Lexham Bible Dictionary says this quote, people in the Bible are often anointed in recognition of the Lord's divine calling upon their lives.
[00:23:57] The anointing was a physical recognition of their particular role or office.
[00:24:04] Anointing in the Bible, Listen to this.
[00:24:07] Signifies that God was staking a claim on the anointed and. Or that God was pouring out his spirit upon the anointed. Okay? So it's God staking a claim for something to serve him. So I've been on dozens of ministry trips the last 20 years in ministry, and the most impactful, by far the most impactful trip that I've ever been on for me personally.
[00:24:43] In February of 2016, Ebony and I went. We spent a little over a week in Dubai and a little over a week in South Africa.
[00:24:52] And there was multiple agendas for the trip.
[00:24:56] We spent the first week in Dubai, we spent the second week in South Africa visiting churches, did some preaching, did some worship, leading, attended a conference, did a bunch of different things. But when we were in Dubai, like I said, one of the agendas for the time in Dubai was this conference.
[00:25:15] And it was interesting because I knew a handful of people that were there, but the vast majority of people I'd never met before.
[00:25:24] And I'm leading worship, and I finish up my session, and this young woman from London, she kind of catches me in the hall, and I could tell, like, something was happening. She was kind of looking at me, and she was like, I'm so sorry. She's like, there's such an anointing on your life.
[00:25:48] Like, I know we don't know each other. I'm not trying to be weird.
[00:25:51] I think you were there for this part too, right? She's just like, there's such an anointing in your life. And she starts trying to just process. She's like, God's doing something with me right now. I feel like I'm supposed to tell you this. EB and her have this really powerful moment. I'm like, okay, that's like I've never met her before. She just kind of stops me and shares something that sounds really important, right? You hear that word, even if you don't know what it means, you're like, that sounds important. Okay, I should probably investigate this same day.
[00:26:18] Later on in the conference, I'm in between sessions and this man from Sri Lanka, like, small talk, like, I think we were filling up coffee or something, and he just kind of looks over at me and he's like, sorry, I don't know. I know I don't know you, but guess what? He says, same thing.
[00:26:41] He starts. He's like, God's gonna do this, this, this, this and this in your life and blah, blah, blah, blah. I'm like, dude, you don't even know me. Like, alright. At this point, my antennas are kind of like, okay, they're going off, something's going on.
[00:26:56] Later on, I'm in a breakout session and a husband and a wife are leading this breakout session. There's maybe 50 people in the room, so it's small.
[00:27:10] And I had just met her and her husband before the session for like two minutes.
[00:27:22] She literally stopped. She's in the middle of a session there, like a panel thing, right? You know, you're up there, you're at a conference, right? And she literally stops the session. She goes, somebody asked her a question, she's answering. She goes, hold on a second.
[00:27:34] And she goes, tom, are you in the room?
[00:27:37] Guess what she says.
[00:27:39] She's like, there's like this anointing on your life. And she goes, where's Ebony? Because I had introduced. I forget how it was. I think I introduced you or I talked about you or something. She's like, where's Ebony? And then she starts saying all this stuff about Ebony and describing this anointing. And like, this is not just my thing. It's her. Like, she just starts describing this and I'm like, what is going on? What's wild about that story is that I didn't know any of those people.
[00:28:03] They didn't know my story. What they did not know was that at the time, God was doing something in me and Ebony that really nobody knew about. He was like, we were. I'll speak for me. I was really wrestling with what God was putting on my heart.
[00:28:17] I was really wrestling. We had already engaged. We had already taken part in two church plants.
[00:28:23] And listen, planting and pastoring churches is.
[00:28:27] I don't know if there's something harder to do in life. It's really tricky. It's really hard, but it's really beautiful. It's amazing. But at that point, we had already done two, and God started stirring up like, hey, I want you to do it again, and I want you to lead it. And I was like, ugh. At that time, I was like, no, man. I have other responsibilities. There's other things I feel compelled to do. And God was like, I was wrestling with the Lord about this.
[00:28:52] They had no idea.
[00:28:55] But what happened was those three different people, they could see spiritually what God was up to.
[00:29:02] They didn't fully understand it, but they could sense it. And they could see it. And it affected them in such a way where they needed to kind of verbalize this for them in the sense of obeying God and how he wanted them to serve in that point, me and my wife.
[00:29:15] But they could see spiritually what God was up to, that God was staking a claim on us for a specific role, a specific service to plant and to lead what would become this church hugely impacted my life. All three of those people separately said the same thing. There's such an anointing on your life.
[00:29:38] Hear me this word. Anointing gets thrown around a lot, but you need to know what it means. Anointing is when God claims a person for a specific role of service unto him.
[00:29:49] Makes sense. While the soldiers would anoint those shields with oil, huh?
[00:29:53] Serve like a specific area of service unto the Lord, the same is true for the person. That's what anointing is. And listen, it's not just for pastors.
[00:30:03] It's not just for church planters.
[00:30:06] Did you know that God anoints moms?
[00:30:12] You want to talk about a service unto the Lord?
[00:30:16] God anoints mothers. God anoints managers. Some of you manage people in your workplaces.
[00:30:22] God anoints teachers.
[00:30:24] God anoints trainers. He anoints fathers. He anoints farmers. He anoints friends. Like God is anointing people for all. Hear me. All sorts of areas of service and roles of service primarily unto him and his agenda and his will. You with me in this?
[00:30:41] So when I say this, what I don't want you to hear is that God anoints pastors and church planters. Yes, of course he does. But guess what? You know, it's God's desire to anoint you.
[00:30:51] Do you know that nothing's off limits to him?
[00:30:57] He wants you.
[00:31:00] God anoints people for all sorts of roles to carry out his will.
[00:31:06] If you read the Bible, some of the most tragic stories that I know, I talked about, the answer is found in the word of God. But like, if you read your Bible, there's some tragic stuff in there, there's some dark stuff in there, there's some hard things to wrestle with. Some of the most tragic stories in the Bible are stories of people that they forfeit God's anointing on their life.
[00:31:26] I think about King Saul.
[00:31:29] Like God anointed him as king and then he forfeits the anointing.
[00:31:34] I think about Samson. Like there's stories of people in the Bible that God anoints and then they forfeit the anointing on their life.
[00:31:43] And I was thinking about us this week, guys, especially this morning, and I was like, I was pondering and I'm like, this might sound weird to you, but. And I don't full, I can't fully explain it, but God has, like, given me a supernatural love for you.
[00:32:02] Like beyond what is normal for me as a person.
[00:32:06] It's weird.
[00:32:08] I can't fully explain it, I don't fully have words for it, but something happens. Like he's given me a supernatural love for you as the church.
[00:32:17] And one of the things that I know that's true is because there's these deep desires in me that I can't fully explain, but these deep longings and deep wants in me that each one of you would embrace God's anointing on your life.
[00:32:35] Not just entertain it, embrace it.
[00:32:40] And not the kind of anointing that's self defined.
[00:32:43] Not like God. I think I should win American Idol and influence all these people or God. I think I should make a ton of money and just be like one of those people that are just super generous all the time. Like, I'm talking God's anointing, not man's anointing.
[00:32:57] You wanna see what? Okay. If you examine the church and all the brokenness in the church, I would argue that so much of the brokenness in the church is a result of anointing and not God's anointing. I'm here to tell you that God desires to anoint you to service unto him and empower you with his spirit to do things that you could never do on your own. But it requires a letting go of your will for your life.
[00:33:19] You with me.
[00:33:21] And for whatever reason, he's given me this supernatural love for our church for you, that I can't help it. I really want that for you.
[00:33:29] I really want it.
[00:33:35] Anointing is when God claims a person for a specific role of service unto him.
[00:33:40] And you might be sitting here like, cool, Tom, what does this have to do with our passage? Bro, hear me. Everything.
[00:33:49] Absolutely everything. Jesus, the Messiah, the Christ, same thing.
[00:33:54] The anointed one.
[00:33:56] That's literally what the words mean. They mean messiah in Christ means the anointed one.
[00:34:03] Right? So it begs the question, right? Anointed for what?
[00:34:07] If anointing is God staking a claim on someone for a specific role of service unto him. Okay, cool. Staking the claim for the role of.
[00:34:16] What's the role? Right.
[00:34:19] Now remember Jesus. He asks these Pharisees a question about the Messiah. Do you remember where he gets the answer from?
[00:34:26] The word of God. Specifically what?
[00:34:29] Psalm 110. Right? We just read it, right? Specifically Psalm 110. I want to read those first four verses for you again.
[00:34:37] Because oftentimes when the Old Testament is quoted in the New Testament, someone is saying something. Oftentimes Jesus is quoting the first verse of a psalm. And he's not just throwing out that first verse. He's throwing out that first verse for a reason, but it's also the encompassing rest of the psalm.
[00:34:53] He's drawing attention. These are people that memorized the Bible. Guys, they didn't have a Bible app. They didn't even have a printed Bible.
[00:35:02] The religious leaders had access to the scrolls, but the common man, you and I, they didn't even have access. So what they would do is they would memorize the word of God. So the moment Jesus starts saying the first verse of a psalm, they're going, oh, that's Psalm 110.
[00:35:15] This is what it says.
[00:35:17] Check this out. I just want to read Psalm 110, verses 1 through 4. Again, most quoted Old Testament passage in the New Testament.
[00:35:27] This is King David writing, the Lord said to my Lord, sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.
[00:35:42] The Lord will extend your powerful. What kingdom?
[00:35:48] From Jerusalem you will rule over your enemies. When you go to war, people will serve you willingly.
[00:35:59] You are arrayed in holy garments. This is a Prophetic psalm about the coming Messiah, the anointed one. And your strength will be renewed each day like the morning dew. Verse 4. The Lord has taken an oath and will not break his vow. And you are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.
[00:36:20] Okay, can you see the role the Messiah is anointed for? Here, here's the answer.
[00:36:27] The role that the Messiah is anointed for is the role of the Savior King.
[00:36:34] It's the role of the Savior king. Track with me. This is gonna make sense, I promise. Okay. Verse 42, Jesus, he asks the Pharisees, he goes, you know, the Messiah. We're all waiting for the Messiah, the Messiah, you know, the anointed Savior King. Psalm 110, whose son is he?
[00:36:50] Right. And what do they say? They go, he's King David's son.
[00:36:53] Right. In other words, the Messiah is going to be a descendant from King David. He's going to be King David's great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandson.
[00:37:01] That's true. There's plenty of prophetic words in the Old Testament about the Messiah coming through the line of David, the descendant of David. Right?
[00:37:12] But look again at verse 43.
[00:37:16] Jesus says he asked them again. Okay? Yeah, he's the son of David. Yeah. How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord?
[00:37:26] So if he's his son, why would he call him Lord?
[00:37:32] And then he quotes it, the Lord declared to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet. If David calls him Lord, how then can he be his son?
[00:37:39] Do you see it? Like, do you see what Jesus is doing here?
[00:37:43] You gotta get the picture. David's the king, right?
[00:37:48] Yep. David's the king. Okay? He's the king.
[00:37:51] Is the king not the highest authority in any land?
[00:37:56] Wherever you go, the king is the highest authority. There's nobody above him. That's literally what it means to be a king.
[00:38:02] You're the highest authority. Okay, Jesus points out that King David calls the Messiah, the coming Messiah, Lord.
[00:38:13] So King David, he recognized that the Messiah was a higher authority than he was.
[00:38:20] But wait a second, does that make sense? Because David's the king.
[00:38:24] The king is the highest authority in the land. Who's a higher authority than the king?
[00:38:30] Yeah. There's only one answer to that, right?
[00:38:32] God.
[00:38:34] There's only one higher authority than the king, and that's God himself.
[00:38:41] So do you see this Jesus? What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?
[00:38:47] Jesus is saying, the Messiah isn't just the son of David, he's the Son of God.
[00:38:58] We have to know what this means.
[00:39:02] Note takers second point. Jesus is the Son of God.
[00:39:06] No doubt if you've been around Christianity for a minute or two, you've heard that before, Jesus is the Son of God.
[00:39:15] We gotta know what this means. William Barclay says this quote, David calls the Messiah Lord.
[00:39:22] But if the Messiah is David's son, how could David call his own son Lord? Look what he keeps going. The clear result of the argument is that it is not adequate to call the Messiah son of David.
[00:39:33] He is not David's son. He is David's Lord. When Jesus healed the blind men, they called him son of David.
[00:39:42] When he entered Jerusalem, the crowds hailed him as Son of David. Remember that's Hosanna, son of David. Right? We went through that.
[00:39:48] Jesus is here saying, listen to this. It's not enough to call the Messiah son of David. It's not enough to think of him as a prince of David's line and an earthly conqueror. You must go beyond that, for the Messiah is David's Lord. What did Jesus mean?
[00:40:06] He can have meant only one thing, that the true description of him is Son of God. Son of David is not an adequate title. Only Son of God will do.
[00:40:16] Some of you, you're like, you know where I'm going with this. And others of you are like, okay, cool, Jesus is the Son of God. This is so massive. This is so big.
[00:40:26] This is so big that like, if you wrap your brain around it, like I said, it will change your life.
[00:40:31] There's so much power here. Do you understand what it means that he's the Son of God?
[00:40:38] Anybody in the room like Christmas?
[00:40:40] Give me some hands.
[00:40:42] Okay, so think about Christmas. Think about the Christmas story, right? There's miracles that go down with the Christmas story, right? Do you guys realize what you believe is kind of bananas?
[00:40:52] Like, you believe in a virgin birth.
[00:40:56] What?
[00:40:57] That's impossible, right? Not with God, with man. Yes, absolutely.
[00:41:02] But so think about the Christmas story, right? You have the Immaculate Conception. That means God conceived the Messiah, Jesus in his mother Mary's womb, and she was a virgin.
[00:41:15] That's not really.
[00:41:17] That's crazy. Okay, that's hard. So what I want you to see here is biologically Joseph, Jesus, stepdad. Really? Mary's husband, Joseph was not biologically Jesus, Dad, Right?
[00:41:30] Yes.
[00:41:31] Great.
[00:41:32] So biologically speaking, who was Jesus, Father?
[00:41:36] God. Okay. Jesus is the Son of God. Yeah, we can wrap our. Okay, that makes sense.
[00:41:41] That's like, that's this much of it.
[00:41:45] That's a small Portion of what it means that Jesus is the son of God. It's a big part of it, but it's not the entirety of it. Okay, Unless you have a decent understanding of the Hebrew language, you're gonna miss a huge part of what it means that Jesus is the son of God. Okay, let me break this down for just a second.
[00:42:06] I'm not an expert in Hebrew, but I know enough to get myself in trouble.
[00:42:09] So the Hebrew language, it's not exactly rich in adjectives.
[00:42:16] Okay?
[00:42:17] So little English lesson.
[00:42:20] Yes, little English lesson.
[00:42:22] If I were to say the sky is blue, what would be the adjective in that sentence?
[00:42:29] Blue, Right? Or the blue sky? It's a descriptor word. Adjectives describe things.
[00:42:35] So my shirt is black, the sky is blue, your eyes are green. Like those are descriptor words. The colors I'm using are descriptor words.
[00:42:45] The Hebrew language, it's not that rich in adjectives. Okay, and so what they would do.
[00:42:53] Actually, let me phrase it this way. See if you can finish this phrase.
[00:42:57] Like father, like.
[00:42:59] Okay, so you know this.
[00:43:01] Like father, like something. You're familiar with that phrase. And it all makes sense to us, right?
[00:43:07] Because a child inherits traits from their father.
[00:43:11] Every child inherits traits from their father. It could be their eye color, it could be their personality, it could be their disposition, it could be their strengths, it could be their weaknesses.
[00:43:20] Every child inherits something, inherits traits from their father. So we say things like father, like son, right?
[00:43:27] Now listen, because the Hebrew language is not that rich in adjectives. It doesn't really go there very often. What it does is it used the phrase son of as an adjective.
[00:43:41] It used son of to describe a person because a child is like their father. Like father, like son, right? So let me give you some examples. Some of you have heard this before, some of you have not. This will be important.
[00:43:56] You look at the New Testament. Barnabas, right?
[00:43:59] Gifted leader in the early church, did some amazing things. One of the things that. One of the titles that they use to describe Barnabas is they call him the son of.
[00:44:08] Remember what it was?
[00:44:10] Encouragement.
[00:44:11] The son of encouragement. Does that make any sense to anybody in the room? What do you mean? The biological son of encouragement? That's not what they're saying.
[00:44:20] They're saying they're using it as an adjective. Like the blue sky, right? The son of encouragement. Instead of saying Barnabas was an encouraging guy, they say he was the son of encouragement.
[00:44:33] It's not the only example. I'll give you a couple more, right? Do you Remember what Jesus called James and John the sons of thunder. He goes, james and John. You guys are sons of thunder. Okay? It was an adjective to describe those young men, their temperament, their strong will.
[00:44:52] He's saying, those are thunderous guys.
[00:44:55] All right, one more for you, Judas, everyone's favorite character in the Bible.
[00:45:00] If you're not familiar with Judas, he's the one who betrayed Jesus with a kiss.
[00:45:08] Do you remember what the Bible calls him?
[00:45:10] The son of destruction.
[00:45:16] So instead of saying Judas was a destructive person, it says, judas was the son of destruction.
[00:45:29] So in the Hebrew language, there's a breakdown for us in English.
[00:45:35] What does it mean then? That Jesus is the son of God.
[00:45:42] Here's what it means. It means that this man is God.
[00:46:03] You can meditate on that for the rest of your life, and it wouldn't be enough time.
[00:46:10] The implications of that are countless.
[00:46:16] This man is God that will change your life.
[00:46:25] Think about this for a second. Just consider Almighty God, the maker of heaven and earth.
[00:46:35] Like, he thought up physics.
[00:46:40] It was just an act of creativity for him.
[00:46:45] You ever examined your body, like, the human body, and how intricate it is, like, the level of unbelievable beauty and detail in the things that the human body is capable of. And like, according to the Bible, that was just like a day in the studio, the art studio for God.
[00:47:09] Like, just consider almighty God for just a second.
[00:47:15] He can feel like, whoa, he's dang. Like, Almighty God is. His ways are higher than our ways. Right? His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. Yes. And amen to all that. Almighty God, that God. If you want to know what almighty God is like, look at Jesus.
[00:47:36] Why?
[00:47:38] Because Jesus is the son of God.
[00:47:44] When the Bible speaks about Barnabas being the son of encouragement, hey, you want to know what an encouraging person looks like?
[00:47:49] Check out Barnabas.
[00:47:51] You want to know what a destructive person looks like? Look at Judas.
[00:47:55] You want to know what almighty God is like?
[00:48:01] Look at Jesus.
[00:48:06] He reveals what God is like so that you and I can understand.
[00:48:11] He's meeting us on our own. He's like, he's meeting us on our level.
[00:48:18] I confess to you, I spend more time in the four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John than I do in the rest of the Bible.
[00:48:28] And it's not because I think the rest of the Bible is not valuable.
[00:48:31] I'm not one of those weirdos that's like, yeah, these parts of the Bible are good and these parts of the Bible are bad. No, I believe in the full. I believe that this scripture is.
[00:48:38] Is God's word. All of It.
[00:48:42] But the reason I spend more time in the four gospels is not because the rest of the Bible is less important, but because Jesus, more than anything or anyone else, reveals to me what God is like on every level. Guys, not on some levels. On every single level. There's no separating the two. If you wanna know what God's like, look at Jesus and you can learn about what God is like.
[00:49:05] Listen, if you want to know about God's character, what he's really like. If you want to know about God's character, look at Jesus. Read about Jesus if you want to know what God values. Do you know God values things?
[00:49:17] Do you know God hates some things?
[00:49:20] If you want to know what God likes, what he dislikes, what he values, what he doesn't value, what he loves and what he hates, look at Jesus. It's all there.
[00:49:28] He's the perfect expression. He's the fullness of the Godhead in man. Like, he's so that you can wrap your mind at least a little bit around what is God like. If you wanna know his character, his values, you wanna know what he desires? How about this one? This one I love spending time with this one. You wanna know what God's personality's like?
[00:49:45] Do you know God has a personality?
[00:49:47] You know, he expresses emotions.
[00:49:50] He literally feel.
[00:49:52] God feels things.
[00:49:54] He's not an arbitrary deity that's detached from his creation.
[00:50:01] He's engaged.
[00:50:05] He feels. You want to know his personality, look at Jesus.
[00:50:10] I think that's one of the reasons why that show the chosen strikes a chord with so many people.
[00:50:16] Because you're like, oh, I kind of see. I can kind of see more than my imagination from reading. Like, if you want to know what almighty God is like, look at Jesus.
[00:50:27] In John 14:9, Jesus, he tells his disciple Philip. He goes, if you've seen me, Philip, you've seen the Father.
[00:50:37] If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.
[00:50:39] Because Jesus is the son of God. This is way bigger than a family tree.
[00:50:45] This is way bigger than a great grandson. Although it's part of it, it's huge. There's miracles there that are unbelievable.
[00:50:52] But it's so much more than that.
[00:50:55] Jesus is the son of not just encouragement.
[00:51:02] He's the Son of God.
[00:51:07] Okay, I'm almost done. Ben, would you come up? I'm gonna finish up here.

[00:51:15] Some of you are still like, cool. I don't fully get this though, Tom. What does that mean for my life?
[00:51:22] Here's what it means.
[00:51:24] The question that Jesus asks these pharisees in verse 42.
[00:51:31] What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?
[00:51:36] That's the question that I want to ask every single one of us this morning.
[00:51:41] Not like the answer that you'd give on a test.
[00:51:45] The answer that you actually believe inside of you.
[00:51:49] If you want to know what you believe inside of you. If you want to know what's going on inside, look at what happens outside.
[00:51:57] If you want to know what kind of tree it is, look at the fruit on the branches.
[00:52:04] What do you think about the Messiah, friend? Whose son is he?
[00:52:10] Listen, I'm not sure that there's a more important question that a human being can answer than that question that Jesus poses to those Pharisees.
[00:52:23] And I want to pose that question to you this morning.
[00:52:28] What do you think about the Messiah?
[00:52:30] Whose son is he?
[00:52:33] Because, listen, the reason that's such an important question is because how you answer that question will determine not just how you live your life.
[00:52:42] The answer to that question, how you and you alone can answer it. How you answer that question won't just determine your life. It will determine your eternity.
[00:52:57] Our life, friends, the scripture says it's a vapor.
[00:53:05] In other words, it's so short and small in the grand scheme of eternity.
[00:53:14] Here one minute, go on the next.
[00:53:18] And if you're anything like me, it can be really easy to slip into this pattern of just being consumed with the temporary, just being consumed with the here and now.
[00:53:34] How do I secure the desires that I have?
[00:53:37] How do I avoid the difficult thing?
[00:53:43] And I believe that God wants you to know that life is so much more than that.
[00:53:49] There's deep and profound purpose for you.
[00:53:52] And I'm here to tell you that you stepping in and walking out your purpose and has everything to do with how you answer this question.
[00:54:03] Whose son is he?
[00:54:06] Is he just the Son of David?
[00:54:10] There's value there.
[00:54:12] Yeah, man, like he's an authority for sure.
[00:54:19] Or is he the son of God?
[00:54:22] Is he the supreme authority?
[00:54:33] Is jesus your messiah?
[00:54:39] Is he your savior, King?
[00:54:42] Or is he just like more of a consultant?
[00:54:48] Jesus doesn't want to be your consultant.
[00:54:55] He's the lover of your soul.
[00:54:58] I've been thinking about Jesus blood this morning.
[00:55:06] If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus, right?
[00:55:14] Do you have any idea how much he loves you?
[00:55:22] Maybe you forgot, maybe life's crowded it out.
[00:55:28] But Jesus, he's the God, man.
[00:55:33] He's the Son of God. So that you and I could understand what God is like.
[00:55:38] And the triune God of the universe Developed a rescue plan for sinners like me and sinners like you.
[00:55:49] Listen, you and I, we got stains, man.
[00:55:54] Our record is not perfect.
[00:55:56] Our record is far from it. We sin against God. We sin against people. God loves all the time.
[00:56:03] Can't get the stains off.
[00:56:06] I got a tattoo. I could scrub it all I want. I actually don't have the power to get the stain out.
[00:56:13] What is God like?
[00:56:17] God is like a man who willingly sheds his blood to provide what you need. The only thing, the only thing that could cleanse you of the deepest stains on your life.
[00:56:30] Some of you, you've been carrying stains for far too long because you haven't actually embraced Jesus as your savior King.
[00:56:38] You haven't allowed his blood to cleanse you. Sounds weird. Oh, blood? No, like, literally his blood offering to cleanse you of all of your sins and to completely exonerate you.
[00:56:50] Some of you, you're carrying burdens this morning. There's things. There's things you've done and there's things that have been done to you. There's bitterness in your heart. There's behavioral issues. There's hurts and there's pains. There's things that. Hear me, God in and through Christ, in collaboration. God the Father, God the son, God the spirit, in collaboration, working together, devising a plan. Listen to me. To cleanse you. Hear me? What's God like? At great cost to himself.
[00:57:21] If you want to know what God is like, look to Jesus. If you want to know your value, look at Jesus.
[00:57:30] Will you stand with me if you're able to.
[00:57:34] Running out of time. But I want to.
[00:57:45] I want to leave some space for God to speak to you. I know he already is, but some really intentional space.
[00:57:53] Because if this truth that Jesus is the son of God, if it makes your way from your head deep into the core of who you are, it literally has the power to transform you.
[00:58:10] These Pharisees, they missed the Messiah.
[00:58:14] He was right in front of them.
[00:58:18] He made appeals to them on the truth of scripture, and they missed him.
[00:58:24] And I don't want anybody else in the room to miss him either.
[00:58:29] So maybe you're here this morning and you're like, yeah, Jesus has not been the supreme authority. He hasn't. I haven't been, like, relating to Jesus as my Messiah, as the anointed savior, king over my life, as the supreme authority who uses that authority to serve me by providing his blood to cleanse me and save me and rescue me.
[00:58:47] If that's you, I want you to know Jesus wants you.
[00:58:53] He's beckoning you. He's calling you, some of you, this morning. The invitation is to rededicate your life to relating to Jesus as your Savior King.
[00:59:03] Some of you, you never have. You've been in church, but you're not in Christ right now. Do you want him? He wants you. The invitation to embrace the Messiah, to embrace the promised Savior King. It's available to you right now. You can grab ahold of it.
[00:59:20] And it's not necessarily an it that you're grabbing hold of. It's a person, it's a man who is God and he desires to save you and lead you.
[00:59:31] Not just be a consultant.
[00:59:34] Let me pray for us, Father. I pray right now that you would speak to every single one of our hearts in a personal way.
[00:59:40] That you would reveal the reality of the Messiah, the Christ Jesus to us.
[00:59:46] And it wouldn't just be this like Bible study knowledge.
[00:59:55] That the seed of the truth of the word of God would make its way into our heart.
[00:59:59] That would result in the fruit of faith trusting and yielding to the reality that there is a Savior King who has gone to great lengths to embrace me and to cleanse me.
[01:00:20] I want to pray for the freedom of sin right now in the name of Jesus.
[01:00:24] I want to pray for the freedom from condemnation, guilt, shame, condemnation. I pray. Go now in the name of Jesus. The blood of Jesus cleanses us.
[01:00:33] It cleanses all people who say, yes, that's for me.
[01:00:37] I receive that.
[01:00:39] And if you're here this morning and you receive that, I'm gonna ask you hold your hands out and receive the love of God for you right now as an act of faith. It's your physical and your spiritual coming together to go to posture yourself in humility and say, I want you to save me. I want you to lead me. I don't want just a consultant. I want you to be my King Jesus.
[01:00:59] Because the word of God says that if you trust in him, if you believe in him, you will have new life. You'll be a brand new creation. That all of that guilt and shame gets washed away by something way more powerful. The blood of Jesus.
[01:01:16] Let your kingdom come, Father.
[01:01:19] Let your will be done in each one of us.
[01:01:25] We love you and we bless you. We thank you for this morning, thank you for your presence.

[01:02:27] So don't. Don't think like, oh, that's for the people who actually do think. That's for the people who need him.
[01:02:32] Yeah, the ones who need him are the ones that come up with, I need help. I need prayer. Please make this reality more real to me in my heart.
